How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 85 = 51
  3. Check: Work backwards: 51 ÷ 85 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/85, so part = 60 × 85 ÷ 100 = 51. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*85. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

51 is the 60% share of 85. The remaining 40% is 34, and the two parts add back up to 85.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $85 saves $51, so you pay $34.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 85 by 60% gives 136 and decreasing it by 60% gives 34. These do not cancel out: raising 85 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 54.4, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
