How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 2 = 0.06
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.06 ÷ 2 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/2, so part = 3 × 2 ÷ 100 = 0.06. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*2. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.06 is the 3% share of 2. The remaining 97% is 1.94, and the two parts add back up to 2.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $2 saves $0.06, so you pay $1.94.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 2 by 3% gives 2.06 and decreasing it by 3% gives 1.94. These do not cancel out: raising 2 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 1.9982, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
