How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 75 = 30
- Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 75 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/75, so part = 40 × 75 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*75. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
30 is the 40% share of 75. The remaining 60% is 45, and the two parts add back up to 75.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $75 saves $30, so you pay $45.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 75 by 40% gives 105 and decreasing it by 40% gives 45. These do not cancel out: raising 75 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 63, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
