How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 60 = 9
- Check: Work backwards: 9 ÷ 60 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/60, so part = 15 × 60 ÷ 100 = 9. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
9 is the 15% share of 60. The remaining 85% is 51, and the two parts add back up to 60.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $60 saves $9, so you pay $51.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 60 by 15% gives 69 and decreasing it by 15% gives 51. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 58.65, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
