How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 38 = 1.14
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.14 ÷ 38 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/38, so part = 3 × 38 ÷ 100 = 1.14. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*38. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.14 is the 3% share of 38. The remaining 97% is 36.86, and the two parts add back up to 38.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $38 saves $1.14, so you pay $36.86.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 38 by 3% gives 39.14 and decreasing it by 3% gives 36.86. These do not cancel out: raising 38 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 37.9658, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
