How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 65 = 39
  3. Check: Work backwards: 39 ÷ 65 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/65, so part = 60 × 65 ÷ 100 = 39. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

39 is the 60% share of 65. The remaining 40% is 26, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $65 saves $39, so you pay $26.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 65 by 60% gives 104 and decreasing it by 60% gives 26. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 41.6, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
