How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 3 ÷ 100 = 0.03
  2. Multiply: 0.03 × 64 = 1.92
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.92 ÷ 64 × 100 = 3%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 3/100 = part/64, so part = 3 × 64 ÷ 100 = 1.92. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =3%*64. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.92 is the 3% share of 64. The remaining 97% is 62.08, and the two parts add back up to 64.

Discounts: 3% off an item priced $64 saves $1.92, so you pay $62.08.

Adding and taking away 3%

Increasing 64 by 3% gives 65.92 and decreasing it by 3% gives 62.08. These do not cancel out: raising 64 by 3% and then lowering the result by 3% ends at 63.9424, because the second 3% is taken of a bigger number.
