How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 50 = 40
  3. Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 50 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/50, so part = 80 × 50 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

40 is the 80% share of 50. The remaining 20% is 10, and the two parts add back up to 50.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $50 saves $40, so you pay $10.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 50 by 80% gives 90 and decreasing it by 80% gives 10. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 18, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
