How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 12 = 4.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 4.2 ÷ 12 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/12, so part = 35 × 12 ÷ 100 = 4.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

4.2 is the 35% share of 12. The remaining 65% is 7.8, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $12 saves $4.2, so you pay $7.8.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 12 by 35% gives 16.2 and decreasing it by 35% gives 7.8. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 10.53, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
