How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 20 = 12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 12 ÷ 20 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/20, so part = 60 × 20 ÷ 100 = 12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

12 is the 60% share of 20. The remaining 40% is 8, and the two parts add back up to 20.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $20 saves $12, so you pay $8.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 20 by 60% gives 32 and decreasing it by 60% gives 8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 12.8, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 60. 60% of 20 and 20% of 60 are always equal (both are 60 × 20 ÷ 100 = 12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
