How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
- Multiply: 0.35 × 16 = 5.6
- Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 16 × 100 = 35%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/16, so part = 35 × 16 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =35%*16. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
5.6 is the 35% share of 16. The remaining 65% is 10.4, and the two parts add back up to 16.
Discounts: 35% off an item priced $16 saves $5.6, so you pay $10.4.
Adding and taking away 35%
Increasing 16 by 35% gives 21.6 and decreasing it by 35% gives 10.4. These do not cancel out: raising 16 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 14.04, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 16% of 35. 35% of 16 and 16% of 35 are always equal (both are 35 × 16 ÷ 100 = 5.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
