How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 16 ÷ 100 = 0.16
  2. Multiply: 0.16 × 35 = 5.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 35 × 100 = 16%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 16/100 = part/35, so part = 16 × 35 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =16%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.6 is the 16% share of 35. The remaining 84% is 29.4, and the two parts add back up to 35.

Discounts: 16% off an item priced $35 saves $5.6, so you pay $29.4.

Adding and taking away 16%

Increasing 35 by 16% gives 40.6 and decreasing it by 16% gives 29.4. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 16% and then lowering the result by 16% ends at 34.104, because the second 16% is taken of a bigger number.
