How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 26 = 9.1
  3. Check: Work backwards: 9.1 ÷ 26 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/26, so part = 35 × 26 ÷ 100 = 9.1. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*26. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

9.1 is the 35% share of 26. The remaining 65% is 16.9, and the two parts add back up to 26.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $26 saves $9.1, so you pay $16.9.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 26 by 35% gives 35.1 and decreasing it by 35% gives 16.9. These do not cancel out: raising 26 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 22.815, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
