How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 35 ÷ 100 = 0.35
  2. Multiply: 0.35 × 52 = 18.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 18.2 ÷ 52 × 100 = 35%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 35/100 = part/52, so part = 35 × 52 ÷ 100 = 18.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =35%*52. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

18.2 is the 35% share of 52. The remaining 65% is 33.8, and the two parts add back up to 52.

Discounts: 35% off an item priced $52 saves $18.2, so you pay $33.8.

Adding and taking away 35%

Increasing 52 by 35% gives 70.2 and decreasing it by 35% gives 33.8. These do not cancel out: raising 52 by 35% and then lowering the result by 35% ends at 45.63, because the second 35% is taken of a bigger number.
