How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
- Multiply: 0.04 × 20 = 0.8
- Check: Work backwards: 0.8 ÷ 20 × 100 = 4%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/20, so part = 4 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.8. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =4%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.8 is the 4% share of 20. The remaining 96% is 19.2, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 4% off an item priced $20 saves $0.8, so you pay $19.2.
Adding and taking away 4%
Increasing 20 by 4% gives 20.8 and decreasing it by 4% gives 19.2. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 19.968, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 4. 4% of 20 and 20% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 20 ÷ 100 = 0.8), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
