How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 20 ÷ 100 = 0.2
- Multiply: 0.2 × 200 = 40
- Check: Work backwards: 40 ÷ 200 × 100 = 20%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 20/100 = part/200, so part = 20 × 200 ÷ 100 = 40. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =20%*200. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
40 is the 20% share of 200. The remaining 80% is 160, and the two parts add back up to 200.
Discounts: 20% off an item priced $200 saves $40, so you pay $160.
Adding and taking away 20%
Increasing 200 by 20% gives 240 and decreasing it by 20% gives 160. These do not cancel out: raising 200 by 20% and then lowering the result by 20% ends at 192, because the second 20% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 200% of 20. 20% of 200 and 200% of 20 are always equal (both are 20 × 200 ÷ 100 = 40), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
