How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 3 = 0.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.12 ÷ 3 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/3, so part = 4 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.12 is the 4% share of 3. The remaining 96% is 2.88, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $3 saves $0.12, so you pay $2.88.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 3 by 4% gives 3.12 and decreasing it by 4% gives 2.88. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 2.9952, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 4. 4% of 3 and 3% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.12), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
