How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 500 = 75
- Check: Work backwards: 75 ÷ 500 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/500, so part = 15 × 500 ÷ 100 = 75. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*500. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
75 is the 15% share of 500. The remaining 85% is 425, and the two parts add back up to 500.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $500 saves $75, so you pay $425.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 500 by 15% gives 575 and decreasing it by 15% gives 425. These do not cancel out: raising 500 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 488.75, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
