How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 150 = 105
  3. Check: Work backwards: 105 ÷ 150 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/150, so part = 70 × 150 ÷ 100 = 105. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*150. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

105 is the 70% share of 150. The remaining 30% is 45, and the two parts add back up to 150.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $150 saves $105, so you pay $45.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 150 by 70% gives 255 and decreasing it by 70% gives 45. These do not cancel out: raising 150 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 76.5, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 150% of 70. 70% of 150 and 150% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 150 ÷ 100 = 105), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
