How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 4 ÷ 100 = 0.04
  2. Multiply: 0.04 × 4 = 0.16
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.16 ÷ 4 × 100 = 4%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 4/100 = part/4, so part = 4 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.16. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =4%*4. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.16 is the 4% share of 4. The remaining 96% is 3.84, and the two parts add back up to 4.

Discounts: 4% off an item priced $4 saves $0.16, so you pay $3.84.

Adding and taking away 4%

Increasing 4 by 4% gives 4.16 and decreasing it by 4% gives 3.84. These do not cancel out: raising 4 by 4% and then lowering the result by 4% ends at 3.9936, because the second 4% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 4% of 4. 4% of 4 and 4% of 4 are always equal (both are 4 × 4 ÷ 100 = 0.16), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
