How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
  2. Multiply: 0.4 × 6 = 2.4
  3. Check: Work backwards: 2.4 ÷ 6 × 100 = 40%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/6, so part = 40 × 6 ÷ 100 = 2.4. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =40%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

2.4 is the 40% share of 6. The remaining 60% is 3.6, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 40% off an item priced $6 saves $2.4, so you pay $3.6.

Adding and taking away 40%

Increasing 6 by 40% gives 8.4 and decreasing it by 40% gives 3.6. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 5.04, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
