How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 41 ÷ 100 = 0.41
  2. Multiply: 0.41 × 42 = 17.22
  3. Check: Work backwards: 17.22 ÷ 42 × 100 = 41%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 41/100 = part/42, so part = 41 × 42 ÷ 100 = 17.22. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =41%*42. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

17.22 is the 41% share of 42. The remaining 59% is 24.78, and the two parts add back up to 42.

Discounts: 41% off an item priced $42 saves $17.22, so you pay $24.78.

Adding and taking away 41%

Increasing 42 by 41% gives 59.22 and decreasing it by 41% gives 24.78. These do not cancel out: raising 42 by 41% and then lowering the result by 41% ends at 34.9398, because the second 41% is taken of a bigger number.
