How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 90 ÷ 100 = 0.9
- Multiply: 0.9 × 50 = 45
- Check: Work backwards: 45 ÷ 50 × 100 = 90%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 90/100 = part/50, so part = 90 × 50 ÷ 100 = 45. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =90%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
45 is the 90% share of 50. The remaining 10% is 5, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 90% off an item priced $50 saves $45, so you pay $5.
Adding and taking away 90%
Increasing 50 by 90% gives 95 and decreasing it by 90% gives 5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 90% and then lowering the result by 90% ends at 9.5, because the second 90% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 50% of 90. 90% of 50 and 50% of 90 are always equal (both are 90 × 50 ÷ 100 = 45), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
