How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 10 ÷ 100 = 0.1
  2. Multiply: 0.1 × 65 = 6.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.5 ÷ 65 × 100 = 10%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 10/100 = part/65, so part = 10 × 65 ÷ 100 = 6.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =10%*65. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.5 is the 10% share of 65. The remaining 90% is 58.5, and the two parts add back up to 65.

Discounts: 10% off an item priced $65 saves $6.5, so you pay $58.5.

Adding and taking away 10%

Increasing 65 by 10% gives 71.5 and decreasing it by 10% gives 58.5. These do not cancel out: raising 65 by 10% and then lowering the result by 10% ends at 64.35, because the second 10% is taken of a bigger number.
