How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 42 ÷ 100 = 0.42
- Multiply: 0.42 × 3 = 1.26
- Check: Work backwards: 1.26 ÷ 3 × 100 = 42%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 42/100 = part/3, so part = 42 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.26. Both methods always give the same answer.
