How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 49 ÷ 100 = 0.49
  2. Multiply: 0.49 × 99 = 48.51
  3. Check: Work backwards: 48.51 ÷ 99 × 100 = 49%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 49/100 = part/99, so part = 49 × 99 ÷ 100 = 48.51. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =49%*99. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

48.51 is the 49% share of 99. The remaining 51% is 50.49, and the two parts add back up to 99.

Discounts: 49% off an item priced $99 saves $48.51, so you pay $50.49.

Adding and taking away 49%

Increasing 99 by 49% gives 147.51 and decreasing it by 49% gives 50.49. These do not cancel out: raising 99 by 49% and then lowering the result by 49% ends at 75.2301, because the second 49% is taken of a bigger number.
