How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
- Multiply: 0.8 × 35 = 28
- Check: Work backwards: 28 ÷ 35 × 100 = 80%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/35, so part = 80 × 35 ÷ 100 = 28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =80%*35. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
28 is the 80% share of 35. The remaining 20% is 7, and the two parts add back up to 35.
Discounts: 80% off an item priced $35 saves $28, so you pay $7.
Adding and taking away 80%
Increasing 35 by 80% gives 63 and decreasing it by 80% gives 7. These do not cancel out: raising 35 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 12.6, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.
