How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 5 ÷ 100 = 0.05
- Multiply: 0.05 × 3 = 0.15
- Check: Work backwards: 0.15 ÷ 3 × 100 = 5%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 5/100 = part/3, so part = 5 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.15. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =5%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
0.15 is the 5% share of 3. The remaining 95% is 2.85, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 5% off an item priced $3 saves $0.15, so you pay $2.85.
Adding and taking away 5%
Increasing 3 by 5% gives 3.15 and decreasing it by 5% gives 2.85. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 5% and then lowering the result by 5% ends at 2.9925, because the second 5% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 5. 5% of 3 and 3% of 5 are always equal (both are 5 × 3 ÷ 100 = 0.15), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
