How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 25 ÷ 100 = 0.25
  2. Multiply: 0.25 × 40 = 10
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10 ÷ 40 × 100 = 25%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 25/100 = part/40, so part = 25 × 40 ÷ 100 = 10. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =25%*40. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10 is the 25% share of 40. The remaining 75% is 30, and the two parts add back up to 40.

Discounts: 25% off an item priced $40 saves $10, so you pay $30.

Adding and taking away 25%

Increasing 40 by 25% gives 50 and decreasing it by 25% gives 30. These do not cancel out: raising 40 by 25% and then lowering the result by 25% ends at 37.5, because the second 25% is taken of a bigger number.
