How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
  2. Multiply: 0.51 × 12 = 6.12
  3. Check: Work backwards: 6.12 ÷ 12 × 100 = 51%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/12, so part = 51 × 12 ÷ 100 = 6.12. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =51%*12. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

6.12 is the 51% share of 12. The remaining 49% is 5.88, and the two parts add back up to 12.

Discounts: 51% off an item priced $12 saves $6.12, so you pay $5.88.

Adding and taking away 51%

Increasing 12 by 51% gives 18.12 and decreasing it by 51% gives 5.88. These do not cancel out: raising 12 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 8.8788, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.
