How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 30 ÷ 100 = 0.3
  2. Multiply: 0.3 × 100 = 30
  3. Check: Work backwards: 30 ÷ 100 × 100 = 30%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 30/100 = part/100, so part = 30 × 100 ÷ 100 = 30. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =30%*100. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

30 is the 30% share of 100. The remaining 70% is 70, and the two parts add back up to 100.

Discounts: 30% off an item priced $100 saves $30, so you pay $70.

Adding and taking away 30%

Increasing 100 by 30% gives 130 and decreasing it by 30% gives 70. These do not cancel out: raising 100 by 30% and then lowering the result by 30% ends at 91, because the second 30% is taken of a bigger number.
