How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
- Multiply: 0.51 × 20 = 10.2
- Check: Work backwards: 10.2 ÷ 20 × 100 = 51%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/20, so part = 51 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10.2. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51%*20. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
10.2 is the 51% share of 20. The remaining 49% is 9.8, and the two parts add back up to 20.
Discounts: 51% off an item priced $20 saves $10.2, so you pay $9.8.
Adding and taking away 51%
Increasing 20 by 51% gives 30.2 and decreasing it by 51% gives 9.8. These do not cancel out: raising 20 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 14.798, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 20% of 51. 51% of 20 and 20% of 51 are always equal (both are 51 × 20 ÷ 100 = 10.2), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
