How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 80 ÷ 100 = 0.8
  2. Multiply: 0.8 × 250 = 200
  3. Check: Work backwards: 200 ÷ 250 × 100 = 80%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 80/100 = part/250, so part = 80 × 250 ÷ 100 = 200. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =80%*250. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

200 is the 80% share of 250. The remaining 20% is 50, and the two parts add back up to 250.

Discounts: 80% off an item priced $250 saves $200, so you pay $50.

Adding and taking away 80%

Increasing 250 by 80% gives 450 and decreasing it by 80% gives 50. These do not cancel out: raising 250 by 80% and then lowering the result by 80% ends at 90, because the second 80% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 250% of 80. 80% of 250 and 250% of 80 are always equal (both are 80 × 250 ÷ 100 = 200), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
