How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 51 ÷ 100 = 0.51
- Multiply: 0.51 × 3 = 1.53
- Check: Work backwards: 1.53 ÷ 3 × 100 = 51%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 51/100 = part/3, so part = 51 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.53. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =51%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
1.53 is the 51% share of 3. The remaining 49% is 1.47, and the two parts add back up to 3.
Discounts: 51% off an item priced $3 saves $1.53, so you pay $1.47.
Adding and taking away 51%
Increasing 3 by 51% gives 4.53 and decreasing it by 51% gives 1.47. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 51% and then lowering the result by 51% ends at 2.2197, because the second 51% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 3% of 51. 51% of 3 and 3% of 51 are always equal (both are 51 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.53), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
