How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 100 ÷ 100 = 1
- Multiply: 1 × 150 = 150
- Check: Work backwards: 150 ÷ 150 × 100 = 100%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 100/100 = part/150, so part = 100 × 150 ÷ 100 = 150. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =100%*150. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
100% of a number is the number itself, so the answer is 150.
Mark-ups: pricing an item at 100% of its $150 cost means selling it for $150.
Adding and taking away 100%
Increasing 150 by 100% gives 300. These do not cancel out: raising 150 by 100% and then lowering the result by 100% ends at 0, because the second 100% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 150% of 100. 100% of 150 and 150% of 100 are always equal (both are 100 × 150 ÷ 100 = 150), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
