How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 6 = 3.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 6 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/6, so part = 60 × 6 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*6. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.6 is the 60% share of 6. The remaining 40% is 2.4, and the two parts add back up to 6.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $6 saves $3.6, so you pay $2.4.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 6 by 60% gives 9.6 and decreasing it by 60% gives 2.4. These do not cancel out: raising 6 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 3.84, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
