How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 6 ÷ 100 = 0.06
  2. Multiply: 0.06 × 60 = 3.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.6 ÷ 60 × 100 = 6%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 6/100 = part/60, so part = 6 × 60 ÷ 100 = 3.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =6%*60. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.6 is the 6% share of 60. The remaining 94% is 56.4, and the two parts add back up to 60.

Discounts: 6% off an item priced $60 saves $3.6, so you pay $56.4.

Adding and taking away 6%

Increasing 60 by 6% gives 63.6 and decreasing it by 6% gives 56.4. These do not cancel out: raising 60 by 6% and then lowering the result by 6% ends at 59.784, because the second 6% is taken of a bigger number.
