How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 60 ÷ 100 = 0.6
  2. Multiply: 0.6 × 73 = 43.8
  3. Check: Work backwards: 43.8 ÷ 73 × 100 = 60%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 60/100 = part/73, so part = 60 × 73 ÷ 100 = 43.8. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =60%*73. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

43.8 is the 60% share of 73. The remaining 40% is 29.2, and the two parts add back up to 73.

Discounts: 60% off an item priced $73 saves $43.8, so you pay $29.2.

Adding and taking away 60%

Increasing 73 by 60% gives 116.8 and decreasing it by 60% gives 29.2. These do not cancel out: raising 73 by 60% and then lowering the result by 60% ends at 46.72, because the second 60% is taken of a bigger number.
