How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 95 = 38
- Check: Work backwards: 38 ÷ 95 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/95, so part = 40 × 95 ÷ 100 = 38. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*95. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
38 is the 40% share of 95. The remaining 60% is 57, and the two parts add back up to 95.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $95 saves $38, so you pay $57.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 95 by 40% gives 133 and decreasing it by 40% gives 57. These do not cancel out: raising 95 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 79.8, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
