How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 62 ÷ 100 = 0.62
  2. Multiply: 0.62 × 3 = 1.86
  3. Check: Work backwards: 1.86 ÷ 3 × 100 = 62%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 62/100 = part/3, so part = 62 × 3 ÷ 100 = 1.86. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =62%*3. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

1.86 is the 62% share of 3. The remaining 38% is 1.14, and the two parts add back up to 3.

Discounts: 62% off an item priced $3 saves $1.86, so you pay $1.14.

Adding and taking away 62%

Increasing 3 by 62% gives 4.86 and decreasing it by 62% gives 1.14. These do not cancel out: raising 3 by 62% and then lowering the result by 62% ends at 1.8468, because the second 62% is taken of a bigger number.
