How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 64 ÷ 100 = 0.64
- Multiply: 0.64 × 50 = 32
- Check: Work backwards: 32 ÷ 50 × 100 = 64%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 64/100 = part/50, so part = 64 × 50 ÷ 100 = 32. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =64%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
32 is the 64% share of 50. The remaining 36% is 18, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 64% off an item priced $50 saves $32, so you pay $18.
Adding and taking away 64%
Increasing 50 by 64% gives 82 and decreasing it by 64% gives 18. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 64% and then lowering the result by 64% ends at 29.52, because the second 64% is taken of a bigger number.
