How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
- Multiply: 0.15 × 50 = 7.5
- Check: Work backwards: 7.5 ÷ 50 × 100 = 15%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/50, so part = 15 × 50 ÷ 100 = 7.5. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =15%*50. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.5 is the 15% share of 50. The remaining 85% is 42.5, and the two parts add back up to 50.
Discounts: 15% off an item priced $50 saves $7.5, so you pay $42.5.
Adding and taking away 15%
Increasing 50 by 15% gives 57.5 and decreasing it by 15% gives 42.5. These do not cancel out: raising 50 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 48.875, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
