How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 65 ÷ 100 = 0.65
  2. Multiply: 0.65 × 48 = 31.2
  3. Check: Work backwards: 31.2 ÷ 48 × 100 = 65%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 65/100 = part/48, so part = 65 × 48 ÷ 100 = 31.2. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =65%*48. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

31.2 is the 65% share of 48. The remaining 35% is 16.8, and the two parts add back up to 48.

Discounts: 65% off an item priced $48 saves $31.2, so you pay $16.8.

Adding and taking away 65%

Increasing 48 by 65% gives 79.2 and decreasing it by 65% gives 16.8. These do not cancel out: raising 48 by 65% and then lowering the result by 65% ends at 27.72, because the second 65% is taken of a bigger number.
