How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 14 = 0.98
  3. Check: Work backwards: 0.98 ÷ 14 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/14, so part = 7 × 14 ÷ 100 = 0.98. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*14. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

0.98 is the 7% share of 14. The remaining 93% is 13.02, and the two parts add back up to 14.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $14 saves $0.98, so you pay $13.02.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 14 by 7% gives 14.98 and decreasing it by 7% gives 13.02. These do not cancel out: raising 14 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 13.9314, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
