How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 15 ÷ 100 = 0.15
  2. Multiply: 0.15 × 70 = 10.5
  3. Check: Work backwards: 10.5 ÷ 70 × 100 = 15%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 15/100 = part/70, so part = 15 × 70 ÷ 100 = 10.5. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =15%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

10.5 is the 15% share of 70. The remaining 85% is 59.5, and the two parts add back up to 70.

Discounts: 15% off an item priced $70 saves $10.5, so you pay $59.5.

Adding and taking away 15%

Increasing 70 by 15% gives 80.5 and decreasing it by 15% gives 59.5. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 15% and then lowering the result by 15% ends at 68.425, because the second 15% is taken of a bigger number.
