How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 7 ÷ 100 = 0.07
  2. Multiply: 0.07 × 57 = 3.99
  3. Check: Work backwards: 3.99 ÷ 57 × 100 = 7%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 7/100 = part/57, so part = 7 × 57 ÷ 100 = 3.99. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =7%*57. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

3.99 is the 7% share of 57. The remaining 93% is 53.01, and the two parts add back up to 57.

Discounts: 7% off an item priced $57 saves $3.99, so you pay $53.01.

Adding and taking away 7%

Increasing 57 by 7% gives 60.99 and decreasing it by 7% gives 53.01. These do not cancel out: raising 57 by 7% and then lowering the result by 7% ends at 56.7207, because the second 7% is taken of a bigger number.
