How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 70 = 28
- Check: Work backwards: 28 ÷ 70 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/70, so part = 40 × 70 ÷ 100 = 28. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*70. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
28 is the 40% share of 70. The remaining 60% is 42, and the two parts add back up to 70.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $70 saves $28, so you pay $42.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 70 by 40% gives 98 and decreasing it by 40% gives 42. These do not cancel out: raising 70 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 58.8, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
