How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
- Multiply: 0.7 × 11 = 7.7
- Check: Work backwards: 7.7 ÷ 11 × 100 = 70%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/11, so part = 70 × 11 ÷ 100 = 7.7. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =70%*11. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
7.7 is the 70% share of 11. The remaining 30% is 3.3, and the two parts add back up to 11.
Discounts: 70% off an item priced $11 saves $7.7, so you pay $3.3.
Adding and taking away 70%
Increasing 11 by 70% gives 18.7 and decreasing it by 70% gives 3.3. These do not cancel out: raising 11 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 5.61, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 11% of 70. 70% of 11 and 11% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 11 ÷ 100 = 7.7), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
