How to work it out
- Turn the percentage into a decimal: 40 ÷ 100 = 0.4
- Multiply: 0.4 × 45 = 18
- Check: Work backwards: 18 ÷ 45 × 100 = 40%.
Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 40/100 = part/45, so part = 40 × 45 ÷ 100 = 18. Both methods always give the same answer.
In a spreadsheet: =40%*45. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.
What the result means
18 is the 40% share of 45. The remaining 60% is 27, and the two parts add back up to 45.
Discounts: 40% off an item priced $45 saves $18, so you pay $27.
Adding and taking away 40%
Increasing 45 by 40% gives 63 and decreasing it by 40% gives 27. These do not cancel out: raising 45 by 40% and then lowering the result by 40% ends at 37.8, because the second 40% is taken of a bigger number.
