How to work it out

  1. Turn the percentage into a decimal: 70 ÷ 100 = 0.7
  2. Multiply: 0.7 × 8 = 5.6
  3. Check: Work backwards: 5.6 ÷ 8 × 100 = 70%.

Another method. As a proportion of part to whole: 70/100 = part/8, so part = 70 × 8 ÷ 100 = 5.6. Both methods always give the same answer.

In a spreadsheet: =70%*8. Forgetting to divide the percentage by 100 makes the answer 100 times too big. Note that x% of y always equals y% of x.

What the result means

5.6 is the 70% share of 8. The remaining 30% is 2.4, and the two parts add back up to 8.

Discounts: 70% off an item priced $8 saves $5.6, so you pay $2.4.

Adding and taking away 70%

Increasing 8 by 70% gives 13.6 and decreasing it by 70% gives 2.4. These do not cancel out: raising 8 by 70% and then lowering the result by 70% ends at 4.08, because the second 70% is taken of a bigger number.

The other way round: 8% of 70. 70% of 8 and 8% of 70 are always equal (both are 70 × 8 ÷ 100 = 5.6), so you can swap the numbers when one order is easier to work out in your head.
